When I was kid I was told that Finland is neutral country and does not have military nor political alignment of any sorts. Later on I noticed this was a pure lie. With all the treaties and contracts we had towards east, it was obvious that we were far away from being neutral.
Nowadays it's different. We've paid our war debts and we've had a change to strengthten the ties to a western world. Then again there was a talk about neutrality and independency. Especially when talks about peacekeepers were in topics. Martti Ahtisaari's Nobel prize and his work in CMI has inspired a lot of finnish people. Now we're having a talks about Finland's role as a negotiator and mediator in the whole world. I think it's a fine idea, but there's one problem. Our neutrality is still a lie.
We're supporting certain political movements in Afghanistan with guns. We're interfering their internal politics in most brutal and direct ways. Do you think a negotiator like this would be respected? While we go on continuing the long western tradition of crusades securing our economical interests. We have a lot to learn about mediating, respect and neutrality.
