The death of our nature religions, disappearing of spirits, fairies and elves, is usually linked on christianity arriving to Scandinavia. We know by today that church actually did get it's hands wet on innocent blood time and time again when trying to teach us the manners of so-called civilized men. But I think the violence would've not been enough to change our minds. To get us to abandon the harmony and balance with nature, pursuing the pure energy and the search of our very being. And replace it with the search of some strange "truth" and superstitious dogmas without a proven ground.
The real reason we made our choice was the dark side that christians brought with them. The foreign land's luxuries, the power, new supernatural teachings and the earthly miracles were the thing we eventually fell into. With the example of ruling elite, top down to common people. It was just convenient that there was also a savior nearby. But the reason to abandon our gods were in ourselves.
In most of the nature religions there is a concept of unity. The connectedness of all. In such concept, lying to yourself would be impossible. The christianity offered us a nice theoretical possibility to "sin" and still "be saved". The dogma was complicated enough to spend lifetimes on theorizing around it and never be ready. And this we have done. In nature religions the experience of balance and your own well-being would be instant. But you could've not lied to yourself - this was the hard part.
I think we were not ready for the nature religions yet.
